Before it goes on your PFD: on some permitted rivers, rangers inspect every life jacket at the put-in. On the Grand Canyon, only factory sewing is allowed on life jackets, and other permits check that the approval label is still attached and readable. Ironing or sewing something onto your PFD can count as an alteration and get you turned away. Check your PFD maker's guidance and your permit rules first, or put it on your dry bag instead.
